Who we are
Prostate and breast cancer are the two most common types of cancer in Australia. At PBCF our mission is to enhance well-being and quality of life for cancer patients and their dedicated carers. Well-being is more than just physical health - it is how we feel and cope, socially and emotionally and how we nurture positive emotions, engage with others, and add meaning to our lives.
Research shows that patients who have their physical and emotional needs met report better health outcomes and greater life expectancy.
Through our Wellbeing Workshops and support of innovative research, we work to make a real impact on the lives of those affected by cancer.
Join us on our journey to transform the lives of those impacted by cancer.
Together we can spark vital change, improve lives and pave the way for a brighter future.
Our history
The Prostate & Breast Cancer Foundation was established in 2010. Co-founders Samantha and Reg were inspired by a work colleague with a passion for sport & recreation and who as a young mother was diagnosed with late-stage breast cancer. Over her two-year course of treatment, they were struck by how critical social support and well-being is for those facing cancer alone.
The Foundation works to improve health outcomes through free Wellness Workshops with nutrition & exercise helping to build strength, mobility and confidence, and connecting patients in a socailly supportive, caring environment.
Direct funding to advance innovative medical research is also crucial, and the focus here is in the development of 'biomarkers', for eary detection, and the development of 'targeted' treatments, to reduce side effects and limit the cancers growth & spread.
Support
Every cancer journey is unique. Our free Wellness Workshops in fitness and health help, after a diagnosis and during treatment, to build back strength, mobility and confidence and connect patients in a socially supportive, caring environment. For participants, they also mean access to one-to-one social support, or practical help with homecare or transport to or from hospital, if needed during treatment.
Research
By funding more research, the closer we will be to finding a cure.
By resourcing cutting-edge research facilities like St George Cancer Centre we help advance the early detection and treatment of cancer. Research on 'biomarkers' will mean more effective, reliable tests for early detection. New personalised or 'targeted' treatments will lead to therapies with less side effects and limiting or stopping the growth & spread.
Awareness
By fostering a better understanding of the causes of cancer, we can help dispel many misconceptions and promote early detection. By sharing research, hosting community events such as our Wellness Workshops and encouraging public engagement, patients and carers are empowered to take charge of their health, leading to improved health outcomes and personal well-being.
Learn More about CanCare Navigation
CanCare Navigation was inspired by the innovative work of Dr Harold Freeman's 'Patient Navigation Institute', and work in the UK & US on social innovations in supportive care, 'barriers' to treatment and social connectedness. The CanCare Support program trains and enables a team of volunteers to support, one-to-one, a person with cancer.
