Our history
The Prostate & Breast Cancer Foundation was established in 2010. Co-founders, Samantha and Reg, were initially inspired by a colleagues diagnosed with late-stage breast cancer. Over the course of treatment, they were struck by how critical social support is for those facing cancer alone. As a growing pool of social research now shows, those who are alone or socially isolated have far worse health outcomes than those who have support.
The Foundation works to improve health outcomes for people with cancer of any type, through support of medical ressearch and the ground-breaking CanCare Navigation service.
Support
We recognise that every cancer journey is unique. CanCare Navigation program was built upon the principle of one-to-one support. Our volunteers provide a compassionate and empathetic hand to hold for patients and their carers.Through tailored guidance, emotional encouragement and a nurturing community, we stand beside patients, empowering them to navigate challenges with resilience and hope.
Research
By funding more research, the closer we will be to finding a cure.
By resourcing cutting-edge research facilities like the St George Cancer Centre we are able to drive forward advancements in cancer prevention, early detection, treatment, and ultimately work towards finding a cure.
Awareness
We believe that awareness is the foundation of change. By fostering a greater understanding of cancer prevention, we aim to dispel misconceptions, eliminate stigma, and promote early detection. By sharing research, hosting community events such as our CanCare wellness day, and encouraging public engagement, we empower individuals to take charge of their health, leading to improved outcomes and greater well-being.
Learn More about CanCare Navigation
CanCare Navigation was inspired by the innovative work of Dr Harold Freeman's 'Patient Navigation Institute', and work in the UK & US on social innovations in supportive care, 'barriers' to treatment and social connectedness. The CanCare Support program trains and enables a team of volunteers to support, one-to-one, a person with cancer.
